Abstract
The authors describe how traction equipment consisting of one asynchronous motor per wheel, each motor connected to as own separately controllable inverter, was developed for light rail vehicle applications. The power converter unit, a three-level inverter with bipolar transistors, can be used to supply one asynchronous motor for a single axle drive in a 70% low floor tram or two hub-asynchronous motors in a 100% low floor tram
