Abstract
PWM inverters are widely used for traction motor drives. Up to now, most inverters have been equipped with GTO thyristors. Beginning with smaller inverters for trams, the IGBT has started to replace the GTO thyristor. This paper presents some experiences and expected trends for the application of high power, high voltage IGBTs. A power range of more than one MVA can soon be expected of IGBT inverters
