Abstract
This paper deals with the design of sliding mode controllers (SMC) for a vector-controlled impressed-voltage induction motor drive. A suitable design of the nonlinear SMCs permits one to achieve the performances of the cascaded control using only one control loop. Chattering phenomena as well as steady state error are avoided. This is obtained by using the boundary layers together with a torque observer to compensate external disturbances. The validity for practical implementation has been verified through computer simulations and experiments. The new design criteria apply to both DC and impressed voltage vector controlled AC drives
