Abstract
Pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverters have, in recent years, largely maintained their position in the area of electric traction equipment. In connection with three-phase induction motors they form a robust, reliable and highly dynamic propulsion system which satisfies the typical demands of modern mass transit rolling stock. Although PWM inverters have the same topology as those of other industrial applications, there are a number of characteristics emanating from the specific application in traction technology. These specific requirements and the power converter concept derived from them are analysed here by the author
