Abstract :
The performance of a brushless DC motor (BDCM) for low and high speed operation in traction applications is investigated. A simulation model combines the structures of both the machine and the inverter and is used to predict the drive characteristics at base speed and above in the field weakening range. Simulation results show that the motor drive can successfully achieve constant power operation at up to three times the base speed, with high efficiency. Optimum conditions are found for a wide speed range
