Abstract :
In recent years, there have been dramatic changes in the character of security problems, in their technical and business contexts, and in the goals and purposes of their stakeholders. As a consequence, many of the assumptions underlying traditional security technologies are no longer valid. Failure to recognize the depth and breadth of these changes in combination prevents effective solutions to modern security problems. In this paper, we propose a method for IP over WDM network path protection that overcomes the drawbacks associated with other approaches thereby making it an attractive candidate for providing survivability in optical networks. It is expected that WDM technology will be widely deployed in all types of communications networks, not only in wide area networks or backbone networks, but also in metropolitan and local area networks. The proposed security protection method uses generalized multi-protocol label switching technology and is able to provide a scalable framework, fast fault notification, minimal involvement of intermediate label switching routers in path protection, and effective fault monitoring of recovery paths.
