  • Abstract
For practical UWB communications, the pulse shape or envelope is carefully designed for different UWB antennas to meet the FCC spectrum mask. Generally, UWB antenna distorts the pulse during the pulse radiation. As is well known, the UWB antenna transfer function is frequency-dependent. Moreover, the frequency-domain radiation pattern of the antenna could be both frequency- and angle-dependent. As a result, the pulse distortion varies with the angle of radiation. For the pulse distortion due to the frequency-dependent antenna transfer function, the effects on UWB wireless has been discussed and the pulse shaping filters or equalizers is supposed to ameliorate the distortion. The angle-dependent pulse distortion and its effects on UWB impulse communications have been discussed by illustration of an aperture pulse radiation. In this paper, the selection of the template pulse waveform in UWB impulse communications due to the angle-dependent pulse distortion in antenna radiation is discussed
