Abstract
A compact and novel design of microstrip slot antennas for MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) applications is proposed. The idea is based on the spatial multiplexing of local elements (SMILE) techniques to obtain the polarization diversity in a single RF channel. The proposed approach offers several advantages such as compactness, low cost, and compatibility with MMIC. An antenna with two perpendicular slots at 4.2 GHz is fabricated and the polarization diversity is demonstrated.
