Abstract
The first successful commercial phase-shift keyed signaling format (called STAR) for land mobile radio was devised during 1971 and 1972 using very primitive equipment. The authors investigate the format and trace its history and uses from the 1970s through today, and anticipate its future uses in the 1990s. Particular attention is given to the application of this format in the mobile radio area
