Abstract
This paper shows that by placing a spiral antenna over an EBG structure rather than a PEC ground plane, a reduction of more than 70% in antenna height can be obtained without adverse effects on its performance and while maintaining the inherent frequency-independent characteristics. Additionally, the simulation results also show that the conformal ADI-FDTD method is a very efficient tool for complex structure modeling and simulation.
