Abstract
An attempt has been made to develop a simple model of cortical columns exhibiting oscillatory behavior and to understand how various factors influence the ability of model columns to synchronize their oscillatory responses. The model of a single column was a multilayered network of integrate and fire type neurons which has frequency oscillations. It is shown that excitatory intercolumnar connections provide unstable phase locking. NMDA receptors and inhibitory interactions improve the stability of synchronization. Possible extensions of the model are discussed
