Abstract
A functionally motivated model incorporating biologically realistic neuron cell types (pyramidal, basket, bipolar, stellate, horizontal, etc.) and organization (layers I-VI) is presented for the elementary building blocks of the sensory and motor areas of the neocortex (modules). The key strategy is to compare the two areas and to separate the circuitry which is common from that which is strictly local. After the common elements are extracted, an attempt is made to reconstruct an ideal matcher neural module
