Abstract
The standard formatted data unit (SFDU) concept provides the protocols needed to allow access to and understanding of information on a global basis. The SFDU methodology promotes documentational rigor through the administrative services provided by the CCSDS member agency control authorities (CA). The CAs become focal points for acquiring metadata. The data-registration procedures establish a global data-identification mechanism, which combined with standard labeling and conventions for aggregating modular data objects, allows the comprehensive self-identification process needed to support data interchange and data archiving. The basic structure of a type-length-value object (TLVO) is outlined. It consists of a fixed-length label followed by a variable-length value field. The purposes of the label are to delimit the value field and to provide the means by which the format and semantics of the value field might be understood. Language requirements for understanding the retrieved data are presented.<>
