Abstract
In this paper we propose two dynamic bandwidth management mechanisms for connectionless traffic carried over ATM switched virtual circuits based on the threshold based algorithm and the periodical modification algorithm. The aim of such mechanisms is to improve the resource utilization and to offer QoS warranties to IP based services by adapting the ATM connection characteristics (using the renegotiable DBR ATM transfer capability) to the behavior of the outgoing IP source traffic. The mechanisms operation is based on the observation of the VC´s output buffer occupancy variations at the IP/ATM interface. In this study, we present and compare each dynamic bandwidth management mechanism along with their different bandwidth modification policies that allow to adapt to different traffic and network global cost constraints
