Abstract :
Prebreakdown phenomena in insulating oil were optically recorded in strongly non-uniform fields. The observed structural variations and different velocities demand a distinction in positive and negative predischarges. The positive predischarge appears in three consecutive stages: primary, secondary and tertiary streamer, each mode having its characteristic pattern and propagation velocity. The negative predischarge possesses only one propagation stage
