Abstract
This paper gives the initial consideration of using glycerin medium to substitute the transformer oil widely used in present cells of magnetically insulated inductive voltage adders (MIVA). The effects of different mediums on MIVA performances such as electric field distribution, feed current uniformity, and cell output voltage, are simulated and compared. The simulation results indicate that, in case of four pulses driving simultaneously, the cells insulated by glycerin would output a pulse with the peak voltage increasing by about 8%. However, in case of four pulses driving separately, as replacing transformer oil with glycerin, the peak voltage of cell outputs decreases by 9%, and risetime increases dramatically from 32 ns to 59 ns. For the encountered issues caused by the glycerin medium, some solution methods are presented, and the feasibility of utilizing glycerin in MIVA cells is discussed.
