Abstract
As the demand for higher capacity transmission systems continues, there are two major competing techniques: higher bit rate Time Division Multiplex (TDM), and multi-channel Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM). These present major technical problems: i) chromatic dispersion in Standard Fibre with TDM, and ii) channel output power variations in WDM. Practical solutions to these could swing the balance either way. The authors describe the application of fibre photo-refractive gratings to these problems
