Abstract
Electromagnetic response of split-ring resonators (SRRs) placed inside a waveguide at two different orientations chosen to provide interaction of the SRR with either magnetic or electric component of incident field, was investigated by using FDTD simulations. The same half wavelength resonance was observed in the SRRs in both cases, however, the EM response corresponded to either negative permeability or negative permittivity of the medium. A unit cell of a double negative medium composed from two SRRs of different orientations was found to demonstrate enhanced transmission at frequencies, at which either SRR element provided for enhanced reflection
