Abstract
This paper proposes a multi-orientated Observation technique of selecting the terrain characteristic point for relief generalization. The origin terrain points are organized into a suitable format and the 3D Douglas-Peucker algorithm is used to retrieve the most contributive ones. On the other hand, all those terrain points are projected into a limited space. In this pace, several groups of the origin and the corresponding base place imply observed orientation can be definite in diagonal model or cube model, and the final selection is obtained by logical addition of all those intermediate selected points by each couple of the origins and their base planes. Experiments have shown that the technique yields good results when being applied to terrain data at various scales.
