Abstract
The work presented in this paper shows that the increase in total transmission path flow achieved by conversion of one ac circuit to dc, may be as much a result of changes in allowable reliability-constrained dispatch of the ac system as it is a result of increased MW flow on the converted line itself. Furthermore the leverage gained through ac system flow benefits will depend on the characteristics of the dc scheme applied to the converted circuit; specifically its dc capability, its internal redundancy and its inherent overload and continuous capability characteristics.
