Abstract
Multimedia technologies have increasingly been incorporated into courseware systems. Independent approaches exist for the use of multimedia and for the development of courseware systems, but at present there is no model or documentation aiding integration. The individual approaches also have known weaknesses. This paper presents a framework for using multimedia in courseware. The framework uses elements of applied cognitive task analysis (ACTA) and a multimodal theory in support of multimodal interface design and a method for multimedia interface design. Learning principles and multimedia guidelines are also incorporated. A prototype courseware development using the developed framework is presented and used in evaluation
