Abstract :
The power losses inside a typical DC/DC converter is studied in detail by obtaining accurate models for today\´s trench power MOSFET and package parasitics. A novel methodology is proposed to "realize" the futuristic device and package parasitics. The effect of the futuristic technology on the improvement of converter efficiency is studied. It is found that a 3% efficiency improvement is possible if the device figure-of-merit (Qgd*Rdson) improves 100 times, and a 5% efficiency improvement is possible when the parasitics are reduced 100 times at Iout=10 A at 750 kHz. However, 9.4% efficiency improvement could be achieved by combining these two improvements in devices and parasitics as well as reducing the dead-time. Converter efficiency approaching 100% is within reach if these technology progresses can be realized
