Abstract :
A microwave nonlinear directional coupler is described for the first time. It is a novel passive device for signal processing directly at microwave frequencies. The suggested nonlinear directional coupler is a four-port device with power-dependent coupling. Variation of the input microwave signal power leads to the switching of the microwave signal from one output port to another. The device consists of the four microwave junctions, attenuator, and ferrite-film nonlinear spin-wave phase shifter. The latter provides a differential nonlinear phase shift which depends on the value of the microwave signal. Design philosophy of the device is developed. The experimentally measured performance characteristics of the elaborated nonlinear directional coupler are presented. These characteristics are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions
