Abstract :
Summarises recent research in real-time knowledge-based methods and techniques conducted by the Defence Research Agency and Cambridge Consultants. This paper also reports on the development of a large-scale prototype that demonstrates the effectiveness of this research. The scope of the research concerns the development of a knowledge acquisition method for real-time applications, the development of tools that compile the knowledge produced by a knowledge engineering toolset for execution in the Muse real-time KBS toolkit and experimental extensions to Muse to support concurrent real-time execution, referred to as D-Muse. Prior work has demonstrated that knowledge-based techniques provide useful functionality, but in order to meet real-time decision support requirements, these areas needed to be addressed. A prototype is being constructed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the research. It concerns a real-time decision support system to enhance the performance of a helicopter aircrew engaged in a naval mission to search and identify contacts in coastal water
