Abstract
Summary form only given. The impact on Pacific Bell of the October 1989 San Francisco Bay earthquake is addressed. Due to emergency power backup, telephone services were perceived as reliable. The performance of digital loop carrier and remote electronics under critical conditions is reported, and the lessons learned are briefly discussed.<>
