Abstract
Active networks seek to address the problem of lengthy network service and architecture evolution. Further study indicates that the introduction of active networks offers important opportunities for end-to-end performance improvement of distributed applications such as reliable multicast, self-organizing cache and active congestion control. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture for active networks based on plug-in, with which services can be introduced rapidly and flexibly. We highlight a new trigger mechanism which promises to be more flexible. We also describe a new model for a ticket ordering service over the Internet. The simulation result indicates that with active networks both latency at clients and load on servers are reduced
