Abstract :
A new arithmetic coding scheme is proposed by converting the multisymbol alphabet to unary alphabet. The multisymbol alphabet of given model is first converted to m-ary alphabet where m ranges from 2 to N, N being the number of symbols in the original alphabet, then each m-ary digit of the transformed input is arithmetically encoded using conditional probabilities obtained by Bayes´ theorem. It is observed that for an adaptive model of either text or images, the compression ratio has improved slightly as the value of m ranges from 2 to 4 and settles down as m takes values beyond 4.
