Abstract
A learning energy management strategy was developed for hybrid electric vehicles to minimize long term fuel consumption and maintain battery charge. The strategy is based on the minimization of a cost function that consists of fuel consumption, change in battery state of charge, and a penalty factor. A learning scheme was developed to adjust the penalty factor for different driving conditions.
