Abstract
DSOs (Digital Sampling Oscilloscopes) generally allow the use of averaging to increase vertical resolution and lower uncorrelated noise. While averaging is a useful tool, it is important to remember that it is a type of filtering. Applying averaging successfully is easier if the user understands the characteristics of the filters being applied.
