Abstract
The electrical activation of the smooth muscle in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract gives rise to attenuated electrical and magnetic fields which can be measured on the torso surface. We present here a computational model of the stomach and torso which can simulate the electrical activity occurring within the stomach and the resultant electric and magnetic fields external to the torso. The stomach model is comprised of a dense embedded finite element network representing continuum cells while a coarser boundary element model is used to describe the skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat and skin surface layers within the torso.
