Abstract
In this paper, high frequency LC-VCOs are designed in 0.13 μm CMOS with the purpose of phase noise reduction. Differential designs and the use of differential varactor structures are presented. A mechanism is proposed for a varactor structure that significantly reduces flicker noise from being translated into phase noise. Simulations with this varactor structure show an improvement of 15 dB at a 1 kHz offset at 21 GHz for a VCO with differential tuning, and an improvement of 15 dB at 1 kHz offset at 5 GHz for a VCO with single-ended tuning
