Abstract :
The performance of some reservation-based multiple access protocols for mixed-media mobile radio networks is investigated. We emphasize the improvement achieved in network capacity and spectral efficiency of the mobile radio networks through the statistical multiplexing of information sources. We investigate the basic packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) protocol when supporting voice service and when providing integrated (voice/data) mixed-media services. The deficiency of such protocols is addressed and a refinement is suggested; namely, packet reservation multiple access with reservation subframe protocol. The operational mechanisms and inherent features of the reservation protocols are addressed as well as their advantages and deficiencies. Numerical results are presented and discussed
