Abstract
Search and rescue satellite aided tracking (SARSAT) is a method of employing satellites in low polar orbits to relay the emergency signals from distressed platforms to an Earth station where signal processing techniques are used to measure the Doppler frequency shift. This paper deals with transmitting an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal through a second order bandpass Lerner filter and then estimating the power spectral density of the output signal using the periodogram and averaged periodogram techniques. The Lerner filter possesses a flat response across the passband and a steep skirt response at the band edges, which improves the detection of the carrier component peak at the ELT signal
