Abstract :
The RAC is one of the UK´s leading motoring organisations, whose members can call on help in the case of breakdown. Its service patrols have to deal with all kinds of problems with all types of vehicles. From 1995, they have a powerful new tool to help them. All 1380 RAC service patrols have just been issued with a hand-held electronic workshop manual, containing the equivalent of 160,000 pages of searchable technical information. As well as all aspects of vehicle repair, it includes diagnostic data, towing instructions, component locations, replacement part prices, and health and safety, administrative and membership data. It is very early days, but the hope is that everyone eventually benefits, with even more efficient service from the patrols and a competitive edge for the RAC over rivals lacking this type of facility. No other motoring organisation anywhere in the world has yet adopted this particular solution, to the RAC´s knowledge
