Abstract
The author discusses electric breakdown in gases at high pressure and that in liquid dielectrics. He goes on to describe positive streamer propagation in liquids and the effects of streamer branching. Experiments relating tip velocity to streamer growth are analysed and the significance of streamer branching is made clear. Finally, a mechanism for the tip charge increase is proposed
