Abstract
The European Space Agency (ESA) has sponsored many programmes and studies concerning satellite communications to mobile users, and Marconi Space Systems have been involved in many of these activities. The present Advanced Repeater for Aeronautical and Maritime Integrated Services (ARAMIS) payload represents the culmination of this work. ARAMIS is designed to permit satellite communications services to mobile users to enter a new generation, providing higher capacity, greater bandwidth and facilities to incorporate new terminal standards for new categories of users. The ability to cater for changes in traffic density and time varying geographic distributions of users is provided by implementing a phased array antenna subsystem to generate the L-band beams
