Abstract
Describes how the Annual Traffic Census is conducted, the resources involved and how the methodology and techniques may be developed in the future. The field data collected from the automatic counters and manual counts are subject to initial checks for inconsistencies by comparison with the previous results at the same station. The data are then fed into microcomputers (IBM compatible XT/AT type) for further checking and analysis using the purpose design programs (a suite of 12 subprograms written in FORTRAN) to provide the following output: traffic flow variations (monthly, daily and hourly) and characteristics; annual average daily traffic (AADT) and annual growth; vehicle classification and occupancy; vehicle flow and passenger movements across cordons and screenlines; and estimated overall vehicle kilometrage in the territory
