Abstract :
The Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation (MEPC) installed a computer-based traffic control system in 1973 and has revised the system in 1985. This new system processes the data from vehicle detectors and renews information on 400 variable message signs automatically in every minute. The maximum time lag is three minutes. Closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras are installed to survey the complex traffic condition at main points and at intervals of about one kilometer. Five different type of image processing equipment from different manufacturing companies were installed and tested. The purpose of the experiment was to confirm the performance, accuracy, and feature of each equipment and to investigate their adaptability and problems to the traffic control systems
