Abstract :
A system known as Autowarn has been developed by the Department of Transport´s Traffic Control and Communication Division with the assistance of software consultants F.I. Group. This system is installed on the M4 motorway and its objective is to protect traffic approaching the Severn Bridge from the east. The presence and clearance of obstructions is detected by monitoring occupancy and smoothed speed traffic parameters. The paper describes Autowarn, how it was evaluated, and the results of the evaluation
