  • Abstract
    Delay profiles measured in metropolitan Tokyo are used to evaluate the improvement that RAKE reception has on radio transmission performance. Frequencies of 3.35, 8.45 and 15.75 GHz, and a spread rate of 50 Mchip/s were used for the estimation. A novel stochastic method based on the characteristic function method is introduced to estimate the transmission performance from only amplitudes of the impulse responses. The performance can be expressed in terms of the closed-form equations by applying the series expansion and by integrating these series. This method significantly reduces the computation time and enables us to estimate the site-dependence fluctuation of the transmission performance. The results show that four-finger RAKE reception has the potential of improving the bit error rate performance by two decades and that the RAKE reception is a promising technology for coping with urban multipath propagation
