Abstract
Using a versatile thin film technology (based on aluminum phosphate compositions), we have demonstrated coatings which satisfy requirements for protecting photovoltaic production components from harsh vapor attack at elevated temperatures (via durable passivation) and enable monolithic integration of flexible solar cells (based on suitable dielectric properties). Coated metal substrates exposed to CIGS production environment showed dramatic resistance to vapor-induced corrosion which could lower maintenance costs and downtime in CIGS production. The coating was also applied to metal foil substrates to produce a highly flexible, insulating substrate that was stable to temperatures over 700°C, and functional CIGS devices were prepared using this flexible substrate. The high flexibility and small bending radius are well suited to roll-to-roll production for high volume, cost-sensitive markets.
