Abstract :
We present a review of the developments in the field of biomedical engineering in Mexico that have led to the present state of the profession. Starting with a community of people with diverse backgrounds but a common interest in the 1960´s that were dedicated to research on one hand, and to the servicing of biomedical equipment on the other, to the establishment of undergraduate (1974) and graduate (1984) programs, until a more mature community has been established at the present. Employment opportunities are most abundant in the sales and service sector, followed by engineers in hospitals and a few research positions at established universities.
