  • Abstract
A new method, optimal model reduction for obtaining stable, accurate, low-order models of very large linear systems is presented. A software OPTIMRED was developed for computing optimal simplified models in this work. The package is user-friendly, flexible and robust and as such is well poised for implementing in MATLAB environment. In this paper, using this package, the method is applied to two SISO and MIMO systems. In both cases, the new method is found to work extremely well. Results are compared to models obtained using moment matching, sub-optimal and balanced truncation techniques. In comparison with these widely used techniques, the new method is computationally more efficient, guarantees the stability of the reduced models, uses mixed input and suitable for models with or without time delays. In addition, the development of this package makes the method of this work more accessible to users and is recommended for use.
