  • Abstract
M3VDS stands for Millimetre-wave Multichannel Multipoint Video Distribution Service. The concept is shown. Programmes from many sources are drawn together at the head end and transmitted from a local high-point at millimetre-wave frequencies in the range 30 to 45 GHz. Each customer´s home will have a single, unobtrusive antenna/downconverter. This outdoor unit will feed the domestic television via an indoor unit. Some 15-25 programme channels can be distributed including local channels and later MAC (Multiplexed Analogue Components) and HDTV (High Definition TV) signals as they emerge. One transmitter site will serve about 8 sq. km., sufficient to cover typical small/medium size towns. About one-third of the UK population lives in this demographic `middle ground´ of towns with populations from a few to several tens of thousands. M3VDS can also provide in-filling or extension of cable systems, particularly in areas where there is insufficient duct. The GaAs MMIC used in the downconverter is also shown
