Fast packet switching for broadband ISDN

The paper is designed to serve as a brief introduction to the subject of fast packet switching with particular emphasis on designs of fast packet switch that have been proposed for use in the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) of broadband ISDN. A simple classification of existing fast packet switch designs is introduced and examples of switch designs belonging to each class are described. Some elementary performance comparisons are also drawn between the various classes of switch design
