Abstract :
An airport is a typical strategic target for detection and attack, and runway recognition automatically in an aerial image has an important military meaning. Aimed at the characteristics of the edge lines of the runway in an aerial image, a runway recognition algorithm based on heuristic line extraction is presented. First, we use the Sobel operator to get the edge image that has been number normalized, and extract the available straight lines by employing an heuristic search in the edge image. Then, we connect the straight lines and extract the parallel straight lines. Finally, we recognize the runway correctly based on the characteristics of the grey area. Many experiments show that this method can find the runway of an airport exactly and quickly in an aerial image.
