Abstract
The author considers the selection of variable-speed drives for use with `real world´ mechanical systems. The author outlines some of the problems that can arise, dispels some common misconceptions and suggests ways of finding out if imperfections in a drive are causing problems in a process. In particular he discusses the power converter and speed loop performances
