  • Abstract
Johannesburg, the largest city and main business centre of the Republic of South Africa, has a total population exceeding one million and a maximum one hour peak demand for electricity of 1248 MW (winter 1986). Its electricity network, supplying power to an area of 544 km2 is managed by the City Council of Johannesburg and is independent of the national network. The authors present a description of a refurbishment project which will uprate the municipal power network to 88 kV. The uprating plan, constructional techniques and contractual aspects are all discussed
