Abstract
The software maintenance activity on a large, complex program or system is characterised by a large number of requests for action, each of which is given a certain level of priority. The assessment of priority is an important exercise, with impact on the profitability of the system as a whole; yet in practice, subjective methods are the norm. The paper puts forward a scheme for assessing priority on financial grounds, which allows a more objective view to be taken of the situation as a whole
