Abstract :
An advanced conveyor-based material-handling system called ORTC (on request transport controller) is presented. ORTC consists of a MicroVAX computer under the VMS operating system and a set of distributed BITBUS microcontrollers (nodes) that directly control I/O (input/output) points on the conveyor. Each BITBUS node controls up to eight decision points (or junctions) on the conveyor. A hierarchical control architecture and a flexible and modular software package are implemented to execute the control strategy. The ORTC system is configurable to support many types of conveyor hardware and plant layouts
